Obama Campaign Vows No Letup on Bain Attacks
Even as the Obama campaign team pivots its focus to presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s record as governor of Massachusetts, the president’s re-election advisers insist they aren’t letting up on their criticism of Romney’s tenure as the head of private-equity firm Bain Capital.
The Obama campaign ran about $100,000 in ads in May that focused on Romney’s ties to Bain, a small sliver of the $25 million the president’s campaign spent on advertising expenditures for the month. But Team Obama spent much of the last few weeks in interviews and on social media slamming Romney’s work at Bain — a tone that had made some of the president’s Democratic allies uncomfortable.
“The issue remains: Did his experience at Bain qualify him as a job creator,” said campaign strategist David Axelrod in a call with reporters. “He made that case 10 years ago (when he was running for governor) in Massachusetts and the record there was very, very underwhelming.”
